Scroll saw
shopping recommendations |
I have
received a few questions about which scroll saw books
and equipment to buy and where to buy them. To answer
these questions I have written this basic guide with
items that I fully recommend.

|
¨The scroll saw
handbook¨, by Patrick Spielman, is probably the best introductory
scroll saw book you can get. It contains a short history of scroll
saw and everything you need to know to learn using a scroll saw:
types of blades and woods, gluing, finishing, cutting techniques,
just everything. If you want a scroll saw book, this is the one you
want. You can buy this book at Amazon at a very convenient price by
clicking on the left link. This recommendation is for people living
anywhere in the world. |
|
An alternative to the
former one is the ¨Scroll saw workbook¨, by John A. Nelson, also
excellent and very complete. You can buy this book at Amazon at a
very convenient price by clicking on the left link. This
recommendation is for people living anywhere in the world. |
|
I made the Jennifer
clock shown in the
scroll saw
examples section using one of the patterns contained
in the book ¨Advanced scroll saw clocks¨, by John A. Nelson. It is a
cheap book containing five nice patterns. You can buy this book
at Amazon at a very convenient price by clicking on the left link.
This recommendation is for people living anywhere in the world. |

The excellent scroll
saw that I am happy to own is the 18 inches variable speed model by
Hegner. In my
Hegner
scroll saw review I give a quite complete review of this scroll
saw. You can buy this scroll saw at Amazon at a very convenient
price by clicking on the left link. This recommendation is for
people living in the U.S.A. People living anywhere else should
contact their local Hegner dealers. |
|
If
you live in the USA your best choice for blades is Flying Dutchman
blades. These are distributed in this website:
http://www.mikesworkshop.com
Mike doesn't
only sells the best blades around, he gives a personalized service.
He will tell you which type and size of blade is better for any wood
and task you tell him.
I have some more
comments about these blades in my
Hegner
scroll saw review. |

A very high quality
alternative to the Hegner is the Dewalt DW788 20 inches variable
speed scroll saw. I do not own this scroll saw but I have read the
reviews and specifications and it is a very robust and complete
scroll saw that you will also enjoy using. You can buy this scroll
saw at Amazon at a very convenient price by clicking on the left
link. This recommendation is for people living in the U.S.A. People
living anywhere else should contact their local Dewalt dealers. |

The drill press I use
to make the pilot holes in the wood is a model by Dremel. The rotary
tool can be removed from its support and used independently. This
tool is very useful not only for making your scroll saw inner cuts
but also for many other tasks by using the large collection of
replaceable accessories. You can buy this drill press at Amazon at a
very convenient price by clicking on the left link. In the right
link you have the recommended set of drill bits. This
recommendation is for people living in the U.S.A. People living
anywhere else should contact their local Dremel dealers. |
|
Below I
have included other books that I find interesting,
especially for the beginner.
|
There are
many more books at Amazon. If you would like something in
particular, you can make your own search in the
following search box. Use the first dropdown to choose
¨Books¨ and introduce the appropriate keywords for your
search, like ¨scroll saw wildlife¨, ¨scroll saw
Christmas¨, or whatever subject you may be interested.
